Sri Lanka Air Force shoots down LTTE plane dropped bombs on capital

Feb 20, Colombo: Sri Lanka Air Force shot down one of the two LTTE aircraft that launched an attack on the capital Colombo today, defence officials said.

The LTTE aircraft was chased and shot down near the Katunayake Air Force base. The wreckage was found along with the body of the LTTE pilot, the officials said.

Military spokesman Brigadier Udaya Nanayakkara confirmed that the two LTTE aircraft have dropped a bomb near the Inland Revenue Department in Colombo Fort, where the Sri Lanka Air Force headquarters also located. The building sustained minor damages, the defence official said.

According to the hospital sources, at least 42 people have suffered injuries in the air raid. The Director of the hospital Dr. Hector Weerasingha said that two of them are in life threatning conditions.

Military sources believe the intended target may have been the nearby Air Force headquarters but since the air defence systems were activated upon detection of the intruders and plunged the city in to the darkness, the terrorists have missed the target.

Sri Lanka Air Force have taken up the chase and shot down one plane while the other escaped, defence sources said.

The military believes the Tigers are operating from yet another landing strip in the rebel controlled areas. ,The military said both LTTE aircraft involved in today's air raid over Sri Lanka's capital Colombo were destroyed.
